Contact Lens Care and Hygiene
It is important to handle and care for your contact lenses correctly to reduce the risk of infection. Below are the do’s & don’ts when handling contact lenses.
Do's
- Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Dry your hands with a lint-free paper towel before handling your contact lens.
- Make sure your fingernails are kept short and clean – We do not want your nails to scratch your eyes or tear the contact lens.
- Always rub and disinfect your contact lens everyday with the recommended solution and follow the recommended contact lens cleaning regimen.
- Always replace your contact lens at the recommended schedule – Do not over wear your contact lens.
- Always check the expiry date of your contact lens – Do not use an expired contact lens.
- If you use hairspray, use it before you insert your contact lens.
- Wear your contact lens before you apply makeup and remove them before you remove makeup.
- Replace your contact lens case every 2 months or every time you purchase a new cleaning solution.
- Visit your optometrist regularly for eye checks – some eye conditions have no symptoms!
Don't's
- Do not wear contact lenses that have dropped to the floor or are dirty without cleaning the lens.
- Do not sleep/ nap with your contact lens – there is a higher risk of getting a contact-lens related eye infection.
- Do not swim with your contact lens.
- Do not shower with your contact lens.
- Do not wash and soak your contact lens with any other liquid not recommended by your optometrist – Saline and eyedrops are not meant to disinfect your contact lens.
- Do not use your saliva to clean your contact lens.
- Do not use tap water and mineral water to wash your contact lenses – it can result in a serious eye infection.
- Do not share your contact lenses with others.
