Jerry Tan Eye Surgery is pleased to offer our patients the 5th generation 150kHz IntraLase™ iFS® Advanced Femtosecond Laser, providing an enhanced standard of precision and safety in the flap-making process in LASIK surgery.
One of the latest advances in LASIK is the development of a Femtosecond laser.
The iFS® laser was developed from the Intralase platform (Abbott Medical Optics, AMO, Santa Ana, Calif.) and is the most established Femtosecond laser. It is one of the fastest femtosecond lasers on the market and is designed to create a bevel-edged flap which allows for a more precise adjustment and repositioning under 12 seconds.
How does IntraLase™ work?
Intralase™ is a 100% blade-free approach for the creation of your LASIK flap.
Tiny pulses of laser light, a quadrillionth of a second each, form a uniform layer of microscopic bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye to split it into a superficial layer (the flap) and deep layer (the stromal bed).
It merges thousands of these bubbles into a contiguous layer to create the flap.
The exact dimensions of this layer of bubbles are determined by Dr Tan based on what's best for your eye and are computer-controlled for maximum precision - things that are not possible with a hand-held blade.
Why IntraLase™?
Safety
The occurrence of buttonholes and partial flaps are very rare.
Flap stability
Flaps created using IntraLase™ are also less likely to displace post-operatively.
Flap configuration
The depth, size and contour of the flap are highly precise and predictable.
Aberrations
The Femtosecond flaps create minimal visual distortions.
Better comfort for very small eyes
Less dry eye
Most Femtosecond LASIK patients have only temporary mild dry eye.
Disadvantages of Intralase™
Inflammation
Inflammation now rarely occurs with the Intralase™ because of lower power settings and a faster laser.
Expense
A Femtosecond laser is a much more expensive machine compared to the manual microkeratome flap cutting machine.
